VIDEO: Stationery you need for Grade 1

ROBIN HILLS – The King's School Robin Hills shows you what you need.

Taking your Grade 1 child to school for the first time can be daunting.

You do not want to be worrying about whether you have everything he or she needs.

Cilla du Plessis, head of department for the foundation phase at The King’s School Robin Hills, shows what stationery Grade 1 pupils need, and describes how her school accommodates parents in this regard.

“What we do is, we order a stationery pack from a company and when we have the Grade 1 party, which is in November [the year before] when the children are introduced to their new teachers, we hand it out to the parents,” du Plessis explains.

The school does this so that all stationery is identical and does not distract the pupils.

Parents label every item, even the crayons, so that stationery does not go missing.

This stationery includes several glue sticks, some wood glue, pencils (two fat pencils and eight thin ones), standard crayons, retractable crayons, kokis, erasers, rulers, scissors, flip files, a whiteboard, some whiteboard markers, play dough, a homework pouch, a library bag, a chair bag and exercise books.

This amounts to something between R700 and R800, and King’s charges their parents this fee over 11 months.

Furthermore, parents at King’s must also purchase a maths text book. Much of this stationery can last until Grade 2.
