Eskom in crisis

METRO – South Africans might soon face national blackouts.

The whole country might soon face national blackout.

The power utility said it is expecting about R20 billion from government to help continue buying diesel.

According to the company, which supplies 95 per cent of the nation’s power supply, the grid can change at any time.

But Eskom’s Khulu Phasiwe agreed that Eskom does have financial issues. “We are currently in discussion with government to get us out of this financial difficulty,” he said.

Eskom has experienced major supply problems since last year when a coal silo collapsed at the Majuba power station in Mpumalanga.

For the first time this year, stage one load shedding was implemented on 9 January when generators suddenly broke down.

The utility has also been battling with ageing infrastructure and limited generating capacity.

Phasiwe says the whole reason load shedding is implemented is to prevent a blackout.

According to reports, a government meeting on the power supply issues and how to help Eskom will take place soon.
