Samaritans mistaken for attackers

RANDBURG – Two civilians stop to help a woman who appeared to have passed out.

There was confusion over an incident that occurred on 8 January where a woman was travelling from Duiker Avenue onto Beyers Naudé Drive.

It appeared as if she was being assaulted by two men, whereas they were trying to help her after they had noticed that she was not well.

A1 Assist’s Gerald Smith stopped to intervene after calling for some back-up.

However, it was discovered that a civilian in the car behind the woman, Jonathan Starmer, had gotten out of his car to assist the woman after he had noticed that there was something wrong.

“When I walked toward her window, I noticed that her eyes were rolled and there was like frothing on the side of her mouth,” explained Starmer.

Gavin Badenhorst, who was in a car behind Starmer, and who also noticed what was happening and got out to help.

Starmer was bitten on the thigh by the woman he was trying to help.

He later went to Olivedale Hospital to get it checked.

“I have no hard feelings toward her at all, I just wanted to help and I am glad that she is safe,” added Starmer.

According to Emer-G-Med’s Chris Diedricks who had arrived on the scene,“The woman appeared to have a medical condition and was stabilised on the scene.”

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital by ER24 paramedics and her family was contacted.
