Gauteng takes the Number 1 spot

METRO – "It's not where you were born that should determine your lot in life," said Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi.

Gauteng Province is the crop of the country.

The province is celebrating their number one spot in its matric results. The class of 2014 managed to get 84.7 per cent pass rate, beating and removing the Free State from the number one spot.

Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi expressed his joy and shared the province’s success with those who gathered at Linder Auditorium at Wits on 6 January to discuss the results.

Among those in attendance was the top achievers from different schools in the province.

“It’s not where you were born that should determine your lot in life. No child must suffer and get gutter education because of the colour of their skin,” Lesufi said.

He also said he was happy that Gauteng had reclaimed the number one spot.

“Gauteng is producing the best quality education and the best HODs,” he said.

“To be the best you must beat the best. However, we are concerned that our best is still not the best in the world.”

Lesufi mentioned that any province that wants to beat Gauteng from the number one matric results spot will have to work hard.

Although the 2014 national passing rate has seen a decline of 2.4 per cent from 2013’s 78.25 per cent, Gauteng contributed the highest number of candidates qualifying for bachelor studies in 2014 at 36 848.

The national results now sits at 75.8 per cent.

Lesufi also announced that five schools in Gauteng were involved in the group copying scandal.

He stated that in a week’s time, seven schools will be paperless.

“A paperless classroom, which is the future, is now a reality in Gauteng. About 3 700 pupils in those schools will never see a textbook again. They will have e-books, every pupil will have a tablet, every teacher will have a laptop and every class will have an interactive board,” he said.

He also highlighted that in 2019 a chalkboard will be a thing of a past.
