Bordeaux’s new messy affair
BORDEAUX – Rubbish piles high along pavemen angers residents.
Residents of Bordeaux are unhappy about the piles of rubbish forming along the pavement next to Jan Smuts Avenue.
Ever since the recyclers, who are living in the open land next to the Randburg Taxi Rank, were made to leave during a combined operation in October last year (see previous article), they started collecting recyclable rubbish at different points on the pavement between the taxi rank and Orchard Avenue, residents say.
“It is a problem and it looks bad,” said Bordeaux North Community Forum Chairperson Shanaaz Bailey.
Lance, a resident who would not reveal his surname for fear of being targeted by the recyclers, said that the rubbish is bad for the community, and blows into the road when it is windy.
Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar responded that there is no law preventing people from collecting recyclables, or leaving their carts, on a pavement.
This, as long as the rubbish does not constitute an obstruction on the road. However, Minnaar added that if the collecting of rubbish on the pavements becomes a “real problem” for the residents, they can complain to the director of bylaw management at Metro Police, Sam Sethagu. Sethagu can be emailed at samse@joburg.org.za or phoned on 011 490 1630.
