Another corruption allegation

MALANSHOF – Examiner allegedly crosses 'pass' out and marks 'fail'.

Another allegation of corruption has hit the Randburg Licence Testing Station. Earlier last year, the station in Malanshof was the centre of fraud and corruption accusations, with claims that fake licences were sold outside its gate, and bribes were paid for guaranteed test passes, (see previous article). Now, a man named Moses claims that a test examiner failed him because he would not pay a bribe.

Moses reveals that the driving licence test he undertook was for a code 10 vehicle (small truck) in November. Moses allegedly completed the test, with the female examiner marking the ‘pass’ on his test paper. But as he and the examiner were about to walk into the station to record the result, she paused, allegedly “fussing” with papers. She appeared to be waiting for something, Moses believes. After a while Moses when asked if they could proceed, she allegedly made many notes on the test paper, crossed out the ‘pass’, and marked ‘fail’.

Moses asked what he did wrong, and the examiner allegedly responded that he had rolled backwards off a pull-off on Republic Road. Moses holds that this is impossible as he was driving downhill at the time. The test paper Moses kept reveals the change in result. It shows that he failed his road test, attaining 106 points, one more than the 105 he was allowed. Moses says that the examiner was smart in that she did not mention a bribe at any time, but was still trying to elicit one.

When asked about the incident, Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar responded, “Corruption will never be tolerated in [the Metro Police]. If there is any sign of it, then it must be reported immediately to the [Metro Police] Internal Affairs Unit on the 24-hour hotline, 080 020 3712 or office 011 490 1703/1797… so that any form of corruption can be investigated.” Moses says that it is a “well-known fact” that staff at the station are corrupt.
