Government should do it this way – labour law expert

ROBINDALE – Ivan Israelstam says economic policy must change or SA will be in a 'wasteland'.

The South African economy is deteriorating and certain labour laws need to change to put things on track.

This from Ivan Israelstam, CEO of Labour Law Management Consulting, which is based in Robindale.

He previously spoke out on how the impending changes to the Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Employment Equity Act, and the upcoming new Employment Services Act, will negatively affect business in South Africa (see previous article).

This included an effect on employee job security and the ability of unemployed people to find work)

Since then, the Employment Equity Act changes were signed into law on 1 August and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act changes were signed into law on 1 September.

The Labour Relations Act changes and new Employment Services Act have not been signed in by President Jacob Zuma yet.

Israelstam’s stance has not changed on this matter and he is writing a book on what the government needs to do to stop the economy going down.

It is entitled The Gold Future or the Cold Future. “Everyone in South Africa knows we have potential for a strong economy,” Israelstam said. “[But] if we remain how we are in terms of economic policy we will be in a wasteland. Whereas if we do these things [actions discussed in the book] we will have a gold future.”

Naturally, the book discusses current and imminent labour laws, which Israelstam says will hurt job creation, and rouse labour unrest, and how these laws should be different.
