Christmas cheer to child-headed households

HONEYDEW – Police hand out food parcels and Christmas presents to child-headed households.

Honeydew Police spread the festive cheer to some of the child-headed households in Zandspruit. On 9 December, the police went to give food hampers and Christmas presents to the children who are the heads of their households.

Spokesperson for Honeydew Police Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said they saw the need to do something special for these children who are the breadwinners in their families.

“Christmas is a time to be cheerful and give. Some of these children have never received a Christmas present from anyone so we wanted to give them that experience.”

WO Jacobs mentioned that they also wanted to give them one less thing to worry about this Christmas. “These children are also young. They should not be worried about how or where they will get the next meal for their siblings.”

Rachel Banda (16), who takes care of her three siblings who are all under the age of 10, said they were grateful that there were people who think about them. “Christmas time is family time and most people only think of buying presents for their immediate families and not for strangers. I’m really thankful for what the police gave us today.”

Another happy recipient was Gugulethu Ncube who lives with her two siblings, and she said the groceries will come in very handy. “At least this year we wouldn’t watch other families when they eat on Christmas, we will also be able to cook our own food.”

Jacobs said the project was made possible by the assistance from the Honeydew Community Police Forum (CPF) and contributions from the community members.
