UPDATE: Steve Hofmeyr’s lawyer strikes back

KENSINGTON B – Dan Roodt says that the court case sets a precedent for rampant insults on social media.

The legal representative for Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr recently struck out at those, that he believes oppose Hofmeyr and the Afrikaans culture.

Dan Roodt issued a media statement after Hofmeyr’s court order preventing ventriloquist and comedian Conrad Koch using his puppet Chester Missing, to harass Hofmeyr on social media was set aside at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, Kensington B, on 27 November (see previous article).

“A magistrate… accepted the arguments put forward by Koch that there exists American-style freedom of speech in South Africa and everyone may insult everyone else in the grossest of manners,” said Roodt, who is a member of the Pro-Afrikaans Action Group (Praag).

“Harming your opponent in any way you see fit, apart from physically assaulting him, was given the imprimatur of the court.”

Roodt added that the effect of the judgment, which he said ignored the Harassment Act in favour of a vague appeal to the Constitution, will be greater polarisation between groups in South Africa.

“Evidently, decency is no longer a South African value and we may expect even greater degeneration into harmful campaigns, boycotts, race-baiting and other techniques in the cultural-Marxist arsenal.”

Roodt added that the case was a “victory for those who wish to curtail a rational and balanced debate about South African history and wish to drown it out with their hysterical exaggerations and intolerance toward dissenting viewpoints.”

Roodt concluded that he will “continue to question the manufactured consent that every Afrikaner is a Nazi and that therefore our language, culture and history should simply be effaced from South Africa.”
