Recycled ‘can’deliers lights up Brightwater

RANDBURG - Brightwater Commons does Christmas differently.

Recycled cans and bottles plus a great idea and what have is the unique Christmas decorations at Brightwater Commons.

Brightwater Commons marketing manager Francios du Buisson said, “Our recycling project has been very successful with many people dropping off their recycling goods every week. So I thought instead of buying new decorations, we can make our own out of recycled material.”

The recycling initiative started in 2008 and in 2009 the first Christmas balls were made and displayed at Entrance 2. The big Christmas balls are made up of about 300 tin cans and are bound together with galvanised steel. LED bulbs, which are energy saving, then light up each ball.

Display Solutions owner Lee Saunders is the man behind the design and he had the tough task of ensuring the balls look good, are functional and not too heavy. “We provide new Christmas decorations so manufacturing balls out of recycled material was a challenge,” explained Saunders.

The time-consuming process of collecting the cans starts in August already and each can has to be in perfect condition and of course they must be either red or green.

These beautiful ‘can’deliers can be seen at almost all the entrances at Brighwater Commons and one of the entrances has a light curtain made of plastic bottles and cans. Brightwater Commons is definitely the leaders in recycled Christmas decorations and always has amazing displays of Christmas cheer this time of year.
