‘Police van skipped red light, caused accident’ – says driver

FERNDALE – Driver accuses police of skipping a red light to cause an accident on Malibongwe Drive.

The driver of a Volkswagen Polo has come forward, arguing that a police van drove through a red traffic light to cause an accident on 24 November, and not him.

Honeydew Police officer Constable Herbert Marima sustained minor injuries in the accident on the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Rocky Street, Ferndale, when the police van he was travelling in collided with the Volkswagen and overturned.

A driver alleges that a Honeydew Police officer caused an accident in Ferndale on 24 November, where his own police van overturned and he was injured.

Initial reports from Honeydew and Randburg Police on the scene were that eyewitnesses saw the Volkswagen driver go through a red traffic light and cause the accident.

“The traffic light was green for me…,” now says Aaron Kadango, the Volkswagen driver.

“As I entered the intersection the police van appeared in front of me at high speed, skipping a red light. There was no time to brake… I gave this exact statement to the police at the accident scene.”

Roodepoort Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Khumalo would not comment on how the accident occurred, as a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened at Randburg Police Station, and investigation is still underway. She did say that no arrest has been made yet.
