Greenbelt Communities help clean up

NORTHGATE – Hands work together toward a cleaner and safer community.

Communities stepped in to help Greenbelt Communities achieve their vision on 29 November.

The clean-up day took place on the corner of President Fouché and CR Swart drives.

Grass was overgrown and needed a cut, it was also terribly polluted with old cans, baby blankets, books, and so much more.

Founder of Greenbelt Communities Cristina Owen said that she was very glad for the response that she had gotten on the day.

Groups such as the SOS Protec Sure came in their numbers as well as Community Support Services.

JMPD officer Pat Phetoe stated that he was happy to be part of the clean-up.

Friends, families, and some residents joined hands to help elevate the mess.

Resident Rose O’Hare explained why she came in to help with some family, “Dirt and filth just kills me, and I can’t stand to see South Africa like this.”

Owen said,”Unfortunately, even though it is a good thing that vagrants are trying to recycle, there is not enough provision for what they are doing (dumping) in a legal way that is also environmentally friendly.”

She explained that perhaps a good long-term solution to the problem would be for people to recycle within their homes and in turn create jobs at different recycle depots.

Waste Worx, one of the sponsors for the day, transported the refuse to a legal landfill at the end of the clean-up.
