Officers refuse two bribes in two days

RANDBURG – Constables arrest suspects in Ferndale and Bryanston on possession of drugs, and bribery.

Two officers from Randburg Police Station allegedly refused to take bribes by two suspects, while arresting them in the middle of November. Randburg Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johannes Maja announced this on 24 November. He explained that at around 3pm on 15 November constables William Mbonani and Matsobane Mazwi were on duty, and noticed a suspicious-looking man walking toward a vehicle at Garden Mall, Ferndale.

“They approached him and requested him to be searched,” Maja said. “They searched him and found nothing on his person. He went to the vehicle while the police were observing him.” When the man returned, the officers noticed that he had something in his hands. They approached him and allegedly found that he was in possession of drugs. When they began arresting him, the man allegedly offered the officers some money.

“The loyal and dedicated constables refused, and charged him further with bribery,” Maja said. The suspect, aged 37, recently appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court facing charges of possession of drugs and bribery. In another incident the next day, Maja said, the same constables refused a bribe from a 44-year-old suspect, whom they arrested for possession of dagga in Bryanston. “We salute and thank them for their faithfulness and loyalty,” Maja said. “Investigation continues on both cases.”
