Randburg to pay respect to Phil Hughes

RANDBURG – Randburg Cricket Club Juniors to have a minute of silence before match.

The Randburg Cricket Club Juniors will pay respects to Phillip Hughes, who died after he was hit by a cricket ball this week. Hughes, who was only 25-years-old, was struck on the back of the head by a bouncer while playing in a domestic match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 25 September. He died in hospital two days later.

Randburg Cricket Club Juniors Chairperson Jaco Pretorius revealed on 28 November that a minute’s silence will be held in tribute to Hughes, when the club’s U9 team hosts Xhosa Cricket Club on 29 November. The match will start at about 8.30am. “Whenever this sort of thing happens in sport it is sad,” Pretorius said.

“I think the suddenness of it affects everybody immensely.” He added that because of the incident, questions will be asked about player safety in cricket. This may or may not affect cricket all around the world, including in Randburg.
