Franklin D Roosevelt triumphs at speech competition finals

ROOSEVELT PARK – Franklin D Roosevelt Primary School pupils speak their way to victory.

The Northcliff Rotary Club together with Crawford Preparatory Lonehill recently hosted the finals of the annual Speech Competition, where pupils had the chance to represent their school as well as showcase their skills.

The schools that participated in the competition included Franklin D Roosevelt Primary School, Northcliff Primary School, Bryandale Primary School, Bramley Primary School, Bryanston Primary School, Constantia Primary School, Crawford Lonehill, I R Griffith Primary School, Jeppe Preparatory, Midrand Primary School and Wendywood Primary School.

“The club has been hosting this annual event for the last 33 years, which has become a highlight in the primary school calendar over the years,” said the club’s services director Dean Gounden.

Gounden also added that they are proud that they were to play a small role within the community to maintain a high standard of the English spoken language.

The theme for this year’s prepared speech category was Actions don’t have to change the world to be important.

The winner of this category was Raeesah Gangat of Franklin D Primary School, nearly beating Samanta Lliffe from Northcliff Primary School, who had to take second place.

The winner of the impromptu speech category was Kyla Swart from Bryandale Primary School, and the runner-up was Jasmika Kisten of IR Griffith Primary School.

The overall winner of the 2014 Speech Competition was Franklin D Roosevelt School in Roosevelt Park.

Chief Judge and author Brian Appleton from the National Eisteddfod Academy and Alison Chambers were impressed with the standard and quality of the speeches presented by the participants.
