SA crowns Bachelor and Bachelorette of the Year

LINDEN – Guy Saben and Rozzanne Meyer were crowned as the South African Bachelor and Bachelorette of the year at a Gala event at Silver Star Casino.

Guy Saben (23), a qualified sound engineer from Linden and tutor for pupils with special needs, was crowned the Bachelor of the Year at a prestigious event held at Silverstar Casino on 8 November.

“I didn’t expect to win at all… I am thankful for all the support I received. The whole experience has been an incredible journey so far and an eye-opener to me,” he said.

“I have grown as a human being and became aware of what a lot of people go through. I just can’t wait for next year to use this title as a platform for awareness campaigns – not only for cancer but also for a lot of other causes,” he added.

According to Saben, the South African Bachelor and Bachelorette competition is the only competition that looks at your heart, not what you look like. “I think that is what makes it so special and genuine.”

Saben also said the competition was gruelling.

“Where there are people, there are politics and everyone is hungry for the title. It’s human nature and that is truly justified. The important thing is to keep your head held high and just do it for the right cause.”

Rozanne Meyer (28), a marketing and events specialist from Pretoria was crowned as the Bachelorette of the Year during the glittering gala-evening.

Saben and Mayer were chosen during a nationwide search, which began in April.

Mayer admits the South African Bachelor and Bachelorette competition has been an unforgettable experience and a learning curve.

“It’s been a tough ride, but I learned never to give up and that it is very fulfilling to work hard for a worthy cause like Cansa. The coming year will be a very big challenge because the South African Bachelor and Bachelorette competition will be taken to a new level with four more charities,” she said.

Jacques Momberg, CEO of Copperstone Promotions – who launched the South African Bachelor and Bachelorette competition four years ago – announced during the gala event that four more charities, including Cansa, will be chosen next year to celebrate the fifth year of the competition.

All funds raised in the course of the competition will be donated to Cansa.

About 350 guests, including the media, sponsors, judges, mentors and the public attended the gala evening and all the proceeds will be donated to Cansa.

The 10 finalists sourced various valuable items from paintings, to weekend breakaways and holidays, to jewellery which was auctioned. Gift Ngwenya from Auction Nation was the official auctioneer and the guests opened their hearts and purses and an amount of R101,722 was collected and will also be donated to Cansa.
