Christmas gifts ideas for the family

METRO – Hand-made gifts galore are on offer at Out of the box, and it helps to create employment.

With Christmas around the corner, why not buy your gifts from a non-governmental organisation like Out of the Box.

Nina Venjakoh, founder of the NGO says, she started this organisation because she always wanted to help people.

The organisation provides skills and opportunity to unskilled and uneducated South Africans.

They teach them skills such as sewing, painting, bead and wood work that will later help them find employment.

The garments are all hand-made by the students or teachers from Out of the Box.

A wide range of gifts can be bought from them such as necklaces, arm bangles, bags, paintings, books and wooden toys.

Christmas shopping for the whole family can be done at one place. It is inexpensive and saves a whole lot of time.

Phumzile Nkosi, one of the students, makes bags and journals to put herself through university.

Another student is Joanna Khanye, a grandmother that can’t read or write, but with her hand can make almost anything.

Khanye is the cleaner at Out of the Box and has attended different courses like beading, sewing, wire-and-bead work, knitting, embroidery, crocheting, quilting and candle making. She makes jewellery, wire-and-bead items, bird feeders, lampshades, table cloths, hand bags and uses the money she makes to pay for her grandchildren’s education. All of the things that any student sells go towards helping them in more ways than one.
