We want the vagrants out – KRA chairperson

KENSINGTON B – Residents rejoice as government bulldozes land where vagrants live.

The KenBrink Resident’s Association (KRA) is glad that the Department of Public Works is levelling the land next to the Randburg Magistrates’ Court, Kensington B.

This is because the association wants the land cleared of all the “rubbish” homeless people leave there, and crime to be reduced in the area.

The Department of Public Works started levelling the land with a bulldozer on 30 October (see previous article).

“We want the land cleaned and cleared and we want the vagrants out,” said the association’s chairperson Sandy Heidstra.

“We are glad they [the department] are clearing it, and we want a fence to be put up. It is very difficult because they [the vagrants] say they have nowhere to go.” Heidstra added that the rubbish the vagrants bring attracts “rats the size of cats”, and the association is convinced that people who steal cables hide them among the rubbish.

She added that the vagrants break the fence around the land. This allegedly allows other people to come and dump more rubbish on the land.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood said that he is very glad the department is clearing its land.

“We have tried for a long time to get the department to clean it,” he said. “What the residents and I want now is a long-term solution.” The department did not respond by the time of going to print. The KenBrink Resident’s Association covers Kensington B, Bryanbrink and Daniel Brink Park.
