Man attacked with axe in road rage along Beyers Naude drive

RANDBURG – Suspect in the road rage axe assault appears in Randburg Magistrates' Court on 10 November.

A man was allegedly attacked with an axe during a road rage altercation starting on Malibongwe Drive, Randburg, in the afternoon on 8 November. It has been confirmed that a suspect will make his first appearance at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 10 November.

Media reported that a 30-year-old motorist from Cosmo City was struck repeatedly with an axe after a fellow motorist believed that he had cut in front of him. It began with the Cosmo City driver having to change lanes in front of the motorist because road works were in progress.

The motorist became angry and allegedly swore and hooted at the Cosmo City driver. Then, at a red traffic light, the motorist stepped out of his vehicle holding an axe. He allegedly broke the Cosmo City driver’s car window with the axe. The glass cut the driver’s face. The motorist allegedly swung the axe inside the vehicle and struck the driver on the arm. In an attempt to flee, the Cosmo City driver put his car in reverse and drove into the motorist’s vehicle behind him.

This made the axe-wielding motorist angrier, and he started hitting the Cosmo City driver’s car with the axe. The Cosmo City driver put his car into first gear and sped away. Now on the highway, the motorist caught up to the Cosmo City driver, and forced him to a stop. They both stepped out of their vehicles. The motorist allegedly hit the Cosmo City man again with the axe twice on the head, which caused him to bleed profusely.

With blood in his eyes, the Cosmo City driver allegedly snatched the axe and threw it to the ground. Then then held the motorist tightly and hit him repeatedly. Paramedics arrived and the fight stopped. Gauteng Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that a case had been opened with the police. Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs was not immediately available for comment, but questions were sent to her.
