Committee to fight drugs

WINDSOR – Local Drug Action Committee wages war against drugs in the suburb.

The scourge of substance abuse continues to ravage communities, families and, particularly the youth.

Windsor has been hit hard by this scourge and as a result it has called for the community to stand together and fight against drugs. Various stakeholders attempting to address substance abuse in the area were working in isolation and not solving the problem.

In response Captain Alex Vermaak of the Linden Police Station initiated the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) in Windsor.

The executive committee was elected on 22 May and thus the Windsor LDAC was established.

The LDAC are now working tirelessly to rid Windsor of drugs.

The committee has organised a Door-to-Door Awareness Campaign from 4 November to 8 November. Any interested stakeholders are welcome to join the campaign on 8 November starting at 10am at Windsor East Recreation Centre, on the corner of Viscount and George avenues.

The Launch of Windsor Local Drug Action Committee will be held on 15 November starting at 10am at Robin Hills Primary School, Kalk Street, Randburg. Stakeholders are welcome.

The committee is working according to the National Drug Master Plan 2013–2017. This plan has been designed to serve as the basis for holistic and cost-effective strategies to reduce the supply and consumption of drugs and limit the harm they cause. A key factor in resolving the substance abuse problem in communities will be the ability to implement a coordinated, multi-pronged plan that takes cogniscance of legal, health and socio-economic issues and is supported by all spheres of government and all sectors of society.

The problem of substance abuse will only be overcome if all the relevant stakeholders work singularly and collectively in an inter-sectorial and multi-faceted manner to combat substance abuse.
