Pet education and rescue in informal settlement

The Douglasdale police and Klarika Nettleton from Bloubosrand Community forum help animals at the Msawawa Informal Settlement.

The pets of the Msawawa Informal Settlement were helped by the Douglasdale Police and Klarika Nettleton from Bloubosrand

Community Forum on 23 October.

Animal welfare is of great concern in the informal settlements of our country. Nettleton (Nomsa) has always been ‘their angel’ when it comes to the preservation of the animals in the settlements around Bloubosrand.

The community donates blankets, food, shampoo, tick dip and other pet products to the Bloubosrand Community Forum. These items are then

distributed to pet owners in the informal settlements. In Msawawa Informal Settlement, bags of dog and cat food were distributed to desperate pet owners,

some have at least two dogs and five puppies. Douglasdale Police Warrant Officer Elaine Schmidt and Seargent Nicholas Mokwena supervised the distribution driving throughout the camp.

Each owner is given a mixture of string tick-and- flea dip to ensure the animals are comfortable and healthy. In each case, the owners are

educated on how to properly take care of their pets with regard to food, water and shelter.

Any donations are always welcome and are in great need. Please contact Klarika Nettleton to enquire about volunteering or any animal item donations.
