Minister of Home Affairs keeps his promise

Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba visits Kya Sands Pipeline Informal Settlement.

The Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba fulfilled his promise to deliver lost documents on 23 October to the victims of the fire at Pipeline Informal Settlement.

The fire that raged throughout the informal settlement on 9 October has left hundreds of residents without their important documents such

as identity documents, birth and death certificates. The minister visited the settlement shortly after the incident where he made a promise to the people to

replace their documents free of charge and as soon as possible.

Gigaba kept his promise by promptly arriving at 9am to personally oversee and hand over the documents to residents.

Deputy Director General of Home Affairs Vusi Mkhize said, ”He has come here to honor his commitment, the minister says ‘my word is my bond’ and he has definitely stuck to his promise, by handing out 177 identity documents.”

Ward 96 Councillor Matume Mafokwane commented, ”This is really great to see the minister here honoring his promise to the people, this is a man hard at work at the ground with his people.”

The minister addressed the media where he explained that the process was speedily done within two weeks of the fire. ”We would like to see

all of the people reissued with the documents. Those who were unable to attend today can go to Randburg Home Affairs.” He added, ”The foreign nationals have been put through the system to ensure that they have actually received documents before the time and are legally in the country; this is a longer process and will take more time.”
