Christmas season is upon us and people are planning their holidays away from their homes.

With all the bright lights and smells of Christmas, why not save and conserve your power usage to better our planet?

The 49M Know Your Number Campaign launched in March 2011, seeks to reinforce 49M’s strategic intent to encourage South Africans to be drivers for social and behavioural change and to encourage everyone to ‘Live Lightly’.

The website www.49m.co.za where the calculator will work out your overall electricity usage.

”Our aim is not only to help consumers understand how much their homes are consuming but also assist them in reducing their energy usage by

providing the required tools and advice,” said Pieter Pretorius, Eskom’s senior manager – Strategic Marketing Initiatives.

Here are some Christmas energy saving tips:

  • Use LED Christmas lights and fibre optic decorations. LED lights use 90 per cent less energy than traditional Christmas lights.

Decorations lit by fibre optics use only one light bulb instead of many.

  • Limit the time you leave your Christmas lights on. Put a reminder on your calendar and turn them off for a set period each day.

You can also purchase holiday season lights with a timer.

  • Turn off the lights in your living room when the Christmas tree is lit. The tree will provide enough light on its own.
