A rising tennis star

BLAIRGOWRIE – Advantage Tennis Academy produces some of the best junior girls tennis players in SA.

Advantage Tennis Academy is producing winners.

The academy based at the Randburg Tennis Club, Blairgowrie, sent seven children to play in the Free State Dunlop Key Health tournament earlier this month.

Cara O’Flaherty (who has turned13) won the U12 girls division.

Later, O’Flaherty and Jessica Assenmacher (14) performed very well at a Tennis South Africa junior masters tournament on 9 and 10 October, where only the top eight players in each age group in the country qualified.

O’Flaherty made it to the semi-finals of the U12 girls division and Assenmacher made it to the semi-finals of the U14 girls division.

“I am proud and very happy,” said O’Flaherty. “I like tennis. If I had a rough day I can go play tennis and take my mind off everything. I also like working on goals.” O’Flaherty wants to play tennis professionally one day, but if she cannot she will study overseas, although she has not decided what to study yet. Her favourite part of tennis is playing in tournaments.

“I was really pleased that the girls’ hard work, dedication and commitment throughout the year was rewarded by qualifying for the TSA junior masters,” said the girls’ coach, Gareth Gibson. “These results show that the girls are capable of competing with the best in the country and hopefully this will encourage them to work even harder in the months and years ahead.”
