Vandia Gardens has a blast

BRYANSTON – Children open firefighting hosepipe during a community event.

Residents had a delightful afternoon at Bryanston Park on 11 October, as jumping castles, jungle gyms, free boerewors rolls, beautiful huskies, security guards and firefighter were the order of the day. Vandia Gardens Resident’s Association (VGRA) hosted its Summer Bash at the park. The association caters for residents in Vandia Grove, Beverley Gardens, Bryanston Ext 5 and O’Summit.

Husky Rescue Southern Africa visited, letting children play with the fluffy dogs, while its committee member Ian Jones discussed the nature of huskies, and their need of adoption because of a recent attack by a swarm of bees on the kennels in Lanseria. CSS Tactical performed a demonstration: two members apprehending an armed suspect. The most popular event though, was the demonstration by Randburg Fire Station.

Platoon Commander at the station Christopher Mainole told residents what to do in the event of an emergency. Then, under supervision, allowed each child to open the fire fighting hose pipe in a safe direction. Children lined up in droves for the exhilarating task. “We hosted this to grow community spirit, and for residents to get to know each other,” said the association’s chairperson Kym van Straaten.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. “This event was fantastic,” he said. “It is building community. That is what is needed in a community – for people to get together to solve problems.” He added that it was good for the local businesses to sponsor many of the supplies for the day. Ferndale Spar donated the first 50 boerewors rolls, the assocation paid for the rest. Water bottles were donated by Randburg Montessori. Twisted Whiskers Pet Spa donated dog treat hampers for families.
