SPCA adoption made easy

ROODEPOORT – Animal adoption needn't be stressful says Roodepoort SPCA manager Mandi Cattanach.

The Roodepoort SPCA strives to make adopting an animal a quick and effortless affair. According to SPCA manager Mandi Cattanach, the first step to follow when adopting a animal is research. She said: “Before you adopt a pet, research the breed you are interested in and learn more about the animal’s requirements and what they were bred for.”

Cattanach added that if you adopt a pet, it’s for life and she explained that you have to keep in mind who is going to look after the pet when you go on holiday and if you can afford the services of a private veterinarian.

“The adoption process works like follows: The first step is to complete a pre-home inspection application, where the person adopting the animal will have to pay R100 for a pre-home inspection that will be carried out by a inspector. Once the pre-home check is completed, you will then need to visit the SPCA to complete the legal adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. Once the above has been completed your pet will be sterilised and micro-chipped.”

She said that the entire process takes approximately four to five days.

“You will need the following paperwork when you visit the SPCA to do an adoption: A proof of residence – if you reside in a complex then you will need to obtain proof that animals are allowed in the complex – and lastly, a copy of your ID book.

“People can feel free to come and take a look at the large selection of cats that we have available at the SPCA this week,” concluded Cattanach.
