UPDATE: BMW bursts into flames

UPDATE on the BMW 3 series that burst into flames on 7 October on Riverbend Road.

A BMW burst into flames on 7 October on Riverbend Road.

The Hunters Hill fire station attended to the call which according to Hunters Hill station commander Francois Swanepoel, ”The Hunters crew was dispatched to the scene of the vehicle on fire. The cause of the fire is still not known at this time.” When asked what the cause of the fire might be Swanepoel commented,”If the fire started in the front of the vehicle it is often due to a broken fuel line which then ignites the flames or a problem with the wiring.”

Emer-G-Med was contacted and their Intermediate Life Services (ILS) Jean Briedenhann arrived on the scene and comments , ”The male driver was travelling in the direction of Fourways. He saw smoke coming from the bonnet of the car; he pulled over [onto the shoulder of the road]and did not realise there was a ditch. The driver was able to escape unharmed before the car burst into flames.” Briedenhann adds, ”The driver was just in complete shock and dismay because it was a brand new BMW.”

BMW South Africa spokesperson for Group Automotive Communications Edward Makwana said, “BMW South Africa is launching an investigation into the cause of the incident. There could be all sorts of reasons for the fire. Feedback will be given after the investigation.”
