Sewage blockage persists at Orion College

Sewage spill at Orion College is under control but is there a more severe underlying problem.

The Orion College in Randpark Ridge had a sewage blockage problem on 16 September and eventually, the Johannesburg Water team responded on Friday 19 September.

At noon, the team arrived and unblocked the drain – within three hours the drain was blocked again.

The sewage had spilled onto their sports grounds which disrupts the sport activities of the school.

It seems as though there is a consistent, more serious problem as this has occurred for years.

Orion College principal Louis Buitendag commented, “this has been a constant problem that has persisted for quite a while. Joburg City Water has come to fix the three drains but it seems that every time one drain is unblocked, it blocks up the next one and so on.”

Estate manager of Orion College said, “there must be an underlying issue with the drainage that passes through the school. A problem that cannot merely be fixed by unblocking drains. The smell is horrific and also puts the entire school’s sports events or practice on hold which is essential for the children at our school.”

Joburg Water was contacted on 22 September to comment on this issue.

Regional customer care manager for Randburg and Roodepoort region, Millicent Kabwe responded to the complaint on 23 September, “We will attend to it urgently.”

On 2 October Orion College principal said, “They came to fix the problem on Tuesday 23 September and promised to come and clean up on 25 September. They never came back to clean up, they were contacted again on 25 September… [we were] given a reference number but up to today they never returned to do any clean up. On Friday September our ground staff started to clean up the mess.”
