Joburg’s Inner City Metro Park launched

METRO - The City of Joburg launched the new inner city park to suit the residents' needs.

The new Inner City Metro Park was finally launched in Newtown on 19 September.

The City of Joburg celebrated the new metro park in fine style – the launch had all the trimmings of an event that enticed Joburg residents.

The park, worth about R16 million, is situated close to the Mandela Bridge and will afford residents a place of recreation and relaxation.

Joburg residents waited with bated breath for the Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Mpho Parks Tau to finally declare the park open.

In an effort to suit everyone’s needs – the park has access to water features, playing equipment, an outdoor gym, ablution facilities, six-aside soccer field, an amphitheatre area and the first mobile WiFi-library.

The library will also afford children the opportunity to research school projects and environmental programmes linked to the school curriculum.

Speaking at the launch, the mayor spoke highly of the park and told residents, reporters and guest that everyone should be able to use the facility.

“This is a great initiative for the City of Joburg because the inner park will meet the needs of residents,” he said.

“The city has been working hard to find a suitable place for recreation and relaxation…You are no longer required to be a member of a gym club, all you need to do is to access the city park.”

The mayor also advised the residents to look after the park and to enjoy using it.

The highlight of the event was when Africa Umoja, Mad about Soccer Freestyle and Shomang Sebenzane gave a performance never to be forgotten.
