Water exercise is not just limited to swimming

LINDEN- Zumba instructor recently launched Aqua Zumba lessons in Linden and Randburg during a free session recently.

Linden indoor swimming pool was turned into a fort of bliss with music and aqua dancing on 15 September. This was during the free launch of a new type of exercises independent from gyms which residents had the luxury to attend and enjoy.

According to Zumba dance instructor Erika Cruywagen, exercising in water makes you feel about 90 per cent lighter, therefore your body does not experience the same impact in water as it does on land.

Also, the Aquatic Exercise Association says that water exercise can burn up to 400 to 500 calories per hour.

“That is why water exercise is a fantastic activity for anyone suffering from arthritis, back problems, foot or leg injuries, joint conditions or obesity,” said Cruywagen.

Cruywagen added kicking and moving your arms in water increases muscle development.

“The great thing about water exercise is people can participate longer in the water than they can on land without joint or muscle pain,” she added.

Water-based exercise can be extremely important for those suffering from arthritis, as it improves the use of affected joints without worsening the symptoms.

It can also provide a great benefit to older adults; a great cardiovascular and strength workout with no pain or pressure to the joints. Aquatic exercise is also beneficial to older adults who are at risk of falling. In water, they remain upright due to the natural buoyancy and decrease the chance of losing their balance during exercise, commented Cruywagen.

“The water dancing was so much fun, inspiring and a great exercise. I will do this again,” said Jenny Goldswing one of the Aqua Zumba attendees.

Caitlyn Swan was overjoyed by the experience.

“That was just so much fun. It was fun more than tiring. Tryng to move was difficult because we were weightless but this is something I will definitely do again,” she said.

Water-based exercise is a great exercise for people of all ages and ability. Consider trying something new this spring with water.
