Power outages hit northern suburbs

NORTH RIDING - Power outages and lack of water supply hit different northern suburbs.

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau has confirmed that electricity is currently out in North Riding, Northwold and Sharonlea. He has no explanation as to why, as the relevant City Power official he works with, is allegedly not answering Bittkau’s phone calls.

Resident Veronica Goodall says that in North Riding there have been numerous power outages since last week that have affected her electrical appliances.

The Eikenhof Pumping Station, in Eikenhof, Gauteng, is also not operating due to electrical problems, and therefore Bromhof, Northgate and other northern suburbs are without running water.  Joburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe could not confirm as to when water supply will be restored but said Randwater is working to resolve the situation. Randpark Ridge and Honeydew water reservoirs are not supplying water to surrounding suburbs due to the problem.

“I believe it is due to bad maintenance and repairs [by City Power],” Bittkau speculates. Questions were sent to City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele and comment is awaited.
