Thabang cooks for his future

Meet Thabang Motaung pupil of HTA and winner of Three Ships Whisky bursary.

Thabang Motaung (21) won a bursary from Three Ships Whisky for 2014.

Motaung came from the township Vosloorus where he lived with his brother at his late father’s house.

Now he stays with his sister Happy in Randburg.

From a young boy he was interested in the world of cooking.

He was mentored by his Aunty Corrorean, and whom he visited for Sunday lunches.

It was his aunt who introduced him to Hospitality, Trainers and Associates (HTA) School of Culinary Art in Randburg.

He was very excited to experience the chance to study food in a professional kitchen, “There are lots of things about a commercial kitchen that you need to know, like preparation and hygiene.”

Under the guidance of Chef Kabelo, “He has taught me a lot and encourages me every time there is a function to participate in the food preparation.” Motaung values this great oppurtunity due to the fact that there is a major life of crime in the townships, “It has changed my life to see things differently,” says Motaung.

If he wasn’t working hard in the kitchens he would be playing soccer and cheering on his favourite teams, Barcelona and Pirates. In later years, he wishes to work on a cruise ship where he will tour the world and educate them on the wonders of South African cuisine.
