Taxi hits car, bus and Outsurance pointsman

RANDPARK RIDGE - Taxi hits car, bus and pointsman and causes havoc in its wake

A taxi hit a car, bus and an Outsurance points-man on the corner of Beyers Naude Drive and CR Swart drives, Randpark Ridge, earlier this morning.

According to the Metro Police on the scene, about 19 people were involved and eight or nine have been injured and taken to various hospitals.

Mthunzi Mthombeni, an eye witness and partner to the pointswoman, who was hit said that at around 07:05 a taxi driving in a northerly direction along Beyers Naude drive in the emergency lane, hit a bus that was coming from the opposite direction and turning. The taxi then swerved right and hit the female points-man, then the car.

The Jaws of Life had to be used to get the driver of the car out.

The driver of the car and the pointsman have been badly injured.

The taxi driver has been arrested, and breathalyser test was conducted and was allegedly over the limit.

Four Outsurance pointsmen were on scene and looking glum.

Especially as shortly after the accident, Mthombeni had to direct traffic on the corner with a new partner.

A resident on scene, Cameron Jodi Rodey, said that another accident had occurred on the corner the day before.

This because the traffic lights had been out for a number of days.

  1. There have been so many, sometimes fatal accidents in this area due to the traffic lights not working. THis intersection as well as the one at Paul Kruger and Christiaan de Wet and Paul Kruger and Dolpyn. These robots have been out for months and have endangered the lives of many motorists and outsurance pointsmen. The worst is that NOTHING seems to be done about it and quite frankly NO ONE except the taxpayer seems to care!!!

  2. The other sad thing is that Beyers Naude is known for its taxis driving in the emergency lane – which is as far as i know still illegal? So much so that it is referred to as the Taxi lane. What are Metro doing about this – nothing! just another few peoples lives who will never be the same again!

  3. I agree with Lauren, the EMERGENCY lanes have become TAXI lanes, and NOTHING is being done about this! Other motorists are now following the taxi rules and also starting to use the emergency lanes as their rights to do so. How many deaths will it take before Metro Police start enforcing rules on our roads again?

  4. I strongly agree with Linda and Lauren. Taxis endanger lives all the time with such reckless driving and using the emergency lanes, which actually causes more traffic and bottlenecks. They do the same on the highway and JMPD do nothing about it! I commend the pointsmen and women who are risking their lives daily and doing such a great job. Pity JMPD officers aren’t doing theirs!
