“I am very happy to be part of such a project because this disease is not spoken about enough or until someone you know is affected by it,” said Guy Saben.

Various members of the print media, the sponsors, mentors as well as judges of the Bachelor and Bachelorette Competition attended the dinner. Rozanne MacKenzie, well-known presenter of kykNET’s programme Dagbreek and announcer at jacaranda.fm was the glamorous master of ceremonies.

“The competition began in April and the top 25 was announced. They had to promote themselves and the top 10 was selected. This competition is not a match-making competition but seeks to support children living with cancer,” said MacKenzie.

Well-known and popular artists including Granville Michaels, George Meiring (who is also a judge), Willem Botha and Christiaan Kritzinger entertained the audience at the beautiful Kloofzicht Lodge, which is situated in a breathtaking and unspoiled reserve. The guests were also treated to a tasty three-course buffet dinner.

Ronèl Vermaak and Olivia Curlewis of Cansa briefed the guests about cancer and the important role the Bachelor and Bachelorette initiative plays to raise funds for this worthy cause. The 10 finalists, all winners in their own right, participated in the auction which raised funds for Cansa and singer George Meiring also strut himself as an auctioneer.

“This competition is not a beauty pageant, beauty does not help, and the competition looks for something stronger than that. The winner has to be a people person and believe in our cause,” said Vermaak.

Several events and media launches will follow during the next few months and the 10 finalists will have to do their own fundraisers and media drives before the winners are announced at a glamorous red-carpet formal event on 8 November, which will be held at Silverstar Casino.

More than R500 000 has been raised during the three years with this competition.
