Community celebrates a well-lived life

BLAIRGOWRIE – Residents remember Arnold Iwersen.

Conrad Drive seemed to have quietened down in recent months, almost as though an integral part of it has been missing.

The reason for this, a few residents believe, is that Arnold Iwersen is no longer there to share his infamous warmth and smiles. He sadly passed away after a six month long battle with cancer on 5 August.

Iwersen used to own the very well-known Rex Lion Motors on Conrad Drive and has serviced community automobiles with his foreman, Danie Mienie, for more than 30 years after he emigrated from Germany in 1964.

Iwersen’s wife, Marlinde, remembers him fondly and referred to his farewell not as a memorial service, but more as a celebration of his life.

“Many people came to the celebration, which we held at the German Country Club in Paulshof,” begins Marlinde. “At least a hundred people came; friends, family and tradesmen he worked with… Even soccer players he played with 50 years ago.

“He was always smiling and laughing. It’s difficult to lose someone so quickly if you have loved them for so long.”

Neighbouring businesses in Blairgowrie also wished to pay tribute to this remarkable businessman. Chris and Marcelle Hendrikz from Craighall Car Radio stated that Blairgowrie has not been the same without Iwersen.

“Everyone in the community knew him and a lot of people have come into our shop to ask what has become of him,” said Marcelle. “We took over most of his business when he fell ill and also hired Danie (Mienie) in order to continue Arnold’s great work in our community.”

Marlinde Iwersen asked if she could extend her utter gratitude for the support she has received so far. “To Ortrud Dax who catered for the service and to Rudi Golke, Arnold’s life-long friend, a sincere thank you for being there for me.”
