Spare a kidney?

NORTHRIDING - Henri van Aswegen appeals to the community to help him find a kidney donor

A local businessman who suffered severe kidney failure three years ago, is desperately looking for a kidney donor and is looking to his community for help.”Do you have a spare kidney for me?” asks Henri van Aswegen.

Van Aswegen was diagnosed in 2011 and has been on dialysis for three years. “It’s so restrictive. I have to be treated daily, so I am never allowed to be far from the hospital.” His work is also suffering because he permanently suffers from fatigue.

August is National Donor Month in South Africa, and the Organ Donor Foundation encourages all South Africans to register as donors, so that people like Van Aswegen can stand a fighting chance in life.

The kidney is a safe organ to donate without offering up your life. Although humans are born with two kidneys, we can function on a perfectly normal level with only one.

“If your blood group is ‘O’, regardless of whether it’s positive or negative, we could be a match,” he appealed. “If I can find a match, that person doesn’t have to worry about anything – I’ll have everything covered. I just need to find someone kind enough to try.”
