Sick Nick does it again

PRETORIA - Local motocross rider competes in Redbull X-Fighters.

Local freestyle motocross champion Nick de Wit made the South African crowd roar at the Redbull Freestyle Motocross World Tour 2014, which took place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 23 August.

‘Sick’ Nick De Wit, as he is affectionately known to local fans, is from Muldersdrift and was the only South African rider to participate.

Although he did not make it to the final round, De Wit still managed to rile up his home crowd more than any of the other international champions riding at the event on the day, with thousands of South Africa flags waving fondly at the South African champ.

One fan had even made a big, bright poster stating: “Go Sick Nick, make us proud!” in the colours of our national flag. And proud, they definitely were.

The event was won by Josh Sheenan from Australia, with Dany Torres from Spain and Adam Jones from USA taking second and third place, respectively.

During the post-event press conference, De Wit exuded gratitude for the organisers who brought the event to South Africa. “I’ve travelled with these riders all over the world, but to have it in my home country, that’s amazing.”

When asked what is next on the cards for this home-grown motocross champ, De Wit gave an unexpected answer.

“Having X-Fighters come to South Africa was a pretty big deal for me” said De Wit, who celebrated his 33rd birthday the day before.

But he eluded to something even more special happening for him in the next few weeks.

“I am one week away from becoming a father,” he said, causing the room to erupt in loud cheers. “So I think the next three months, is nights with no sleep, learning to change dirty diapers and figuring out how to make a little person grow.”
