National School Quiz Championships finals to kickstart

RUIMSIG – More than 30 hopefuls will gather at Monash University to battle for the coveted title in the preliminary finals of the National School Quiz Championships this weekend.

Monash University is up to host more than 30 schools for the Gauteng preliminary finals for the National School Quiz Championships on 23 August.

The local team from Trinity House Randpark Ridge will go up against Shangri-La Academy and Springs Girls High School, in an attempt to secure their spot in the national final in December at Carnival City.

DSTVs Mindset Learn Channel (channel 319) will broadcast all the action from the battleground from September.

Channel manager Sheryl Yeadon said, “We are very proud of the exceptional level the competition has reached in recent years and we always wanted to provide a broadcast window to ensure educational entertainment.”

The winning team from this weekend’s prelims will take home Mi-Mate tablets as the Department of Education forges ahead with the introduction of smart learning in all classrooms across the province.

Education Department in Ekurhuleni spokesperson Poovan Chetty said it is an important part of learning that more and more schools participate in said activities together.

“We are thrilled that this is a national project but of course, it is a competition and we want to keep it in the east and spread the concept overall.”

Grade 10 and 12 pupils from 111 schools in the country first took part in the first leg of the competition in June and July.
