Man accused of stabbing wife to death needs mental observation

RANDBURG – Case postponed after accused’s first appearance.

The man who was arrested for stabbing his wife multiple times in Bryanston earlier this month, appeared at Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 22 August.

Prosecution requested that the case be postponed so that the man may be sent for mental observation, referring to section 77 and 78 of the Mental Health Act.

It was the prosecution’s opinion, that the man needs to be observed for 30 days before the trail could continue due to the fact that he attempted to commit suicide after he had allegedly stabbed his wife a total of 50 times at Peter Place in Bryanston on 16 August.

He fled to Pietermaritzburg, where he was subsequently arrested on 19 August.

Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng of Gauteng Provincial Police confirmed that upon his arrest, it was noticed that the man was completely incoherent. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where medical staff assessed that he was suffering from an overdose of an unknown substance.

The man’s identity is known to Randburg Sun and will only be revealed once he has pleaded on the charges. He has applied for legal aid.

The case will resume on 28 August at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.
