How time flies

RANDPARK RIDGE – Rand Park High celebrates 35th anniversary of school in a special way.

Randpark High celebrated their 35th anniversary in a unique, not to mention amazing way on 11 August, much to the delight of past and present pupils.

During school assembly, the “Time Capsule” was opened by principal Alan Wilke and long-standing teacher Salome Marais, to mark the 35th anniversary of the school. Twenty five years ago, on the occasion of the school’s 10th anniversary, the time capsule was filled with items and sealed in front of the school assembly.

A plaque was attached to the capsule with instructions that it may only be opened 25 years later. Marais was one of the teacher’s at the school at that time, and witnessed the sealing of the capsule.

Many interesting items were unpacked by Wilke and displayed to the assembly of pupils, including: a special commemorative edition of 25 years of the Randburg Sun, dated June 1989, a historical record of key Rand Park High milestones since it opened its doors in 1979 and subsequently enrolled its first pupils in 1980, a scientific calculator, vinyl record, computer floppy disk, a list of all the children who were enrolled at the school in 1989, letters from matric pupils of 1989 addressed to the Grade 12 pupils of 2014, a video cassette, examination papers, and many other historical documents relating to the school.

The Rand Park High pupils, who witnessed the opening of the capsule, were particularly intrigued by the R2 note, which was specially wrapped and included in the capsule.

“It was an exciting day indeed,” said spokesperson for the school Heather Robinson, “and one that brought back many memories to past pupils who commented extensively on Facebook when we posted the photographs on Rand Park High’s Facebook page.”
