Child abuser absent from court

ROODEPOORT – The man accused of beating his three-year-old daughter almost to a pulp was a no-show in the Roodepoort Magistrates' Court on 19 August.

The bail application of a Roodepoort man accused of the attempted murder of his three-year-old daughter  was abruptly cut short, after the accused failed to show up during the proceedings on 19 August.

The man’s attorneys asked for an adjournment after a more than four-hour wait.

Arrested last week, the accused’s attorney cited his recent hospital stay at Leratong Hospital as the reason for the sudden dismissal, prompting an adjournment till 29 August.

The State has filed an application to send the accused to Sterkfontein Hospital for psychiatric observation – regarding his state of mind at the time of the said crime.

According to Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs, the child was discharged from Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital on 15 August, where she had spent three nights.

The child was rescued by a passer-by Robert Sadiki, who witnessed the man allegedly bang the child’s head against the wall, kicking and strangling her.
