Young motocross racer ‘could have done better’

RANDPARK RIDGE – Justin Thompson crashes twice to finish 29th out of 42.

Justin Thompson (14) is not entirely happy with his result, after taking part in one of the most prestigious amateur motocross championships in the USA. He raced in the 33rd Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, Tennessee, United States of America, between 27 July and 2 August (see previous article). He came 29th out of 42 racers in the 13 to 16-year-old age group. “I learned a lot,” he says. “I am a little bit happy but could have done better.” He attends Trinityhouse High School Randpark Ridge, and practises and races at Syringa Park, Muldersdrift.

Thompson explains that he crashed in two of his three races, which impacted on his overall result. “I think he did well,” Justin’s mother Debra says. “I was kind of disappointed because he could have done better but it was a huge experience and I am proud of him getting there.” Justin relates how he hopes to become a professional motocross racer and move to America. “That is where most of the racing is and I can earn a living there,” he says. “It is a good country, safe and clean, and people are friendly.” For this reason Justin trains very hard on and off the bike.

He works out at the gym, runs, cycles and follows a healthy diet. He also works on his mental strength by learning how to focus well and stay positive. And of course, Justin rides very often. He often trains with his older brother Bradley (17), who also races. Bradley says he can still beat Justin, “but it will not last much longer.”
