UK’s most wanted extradited

FERNDALE – Randburg Magistrates' Court sees extradition of one of Britain's most famous offenders.

Martin Evans, a man labeled one of the United Kingdom’s (UK) most wanted, heard on 11 August that he will soon be extradited back to Great Britain. The 52-year-old was arrested in Midrand on 2 August for failing to complete a 21-year prison sentence for conspiracy to supply cocaine, and fraudulent trading, in the UK (SEE PREVIOUS ARTICLE). He appeard at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 4 and 11 August for an extradition hearing, and will be sent back in the next month or so to complete his sentence, and face new charges for fleeing from justice. Evans said that he will not appeal the decision.

He hails from Swansea, Wales, and was sentenced to prison in 2006 for drug and money laundering offences. He reportedly cheated investors out of about R16 million in a scam involving an ostrich farm, and orchestrated an operation that brought about R53 million’s worth of ecstasy and cocaine into the UK. In 2011 he was allowed a prison release for a weekend, but he fled the country. UK police labelled him as one of the country’s “most wanted” in 2012.
