Community Association keeps crime to a minimum

FONTAINEBLEAU – Moret residents work together to keep their community safe.

The Moret Community Association (Moretca) in Fontainebleau held their monthly meeting on 4 August at the Fontainebleau Community Church on Rabie Street.

Vice-chairperson of Moretca Martin Opperman was elated that there were no serious crimes to report on for the month of July in their area, but that a number of positive arrests had been made.

“These involved arrests for business robberies, possession of break-in tools, drug dealing as well as drug possession,” stated Opperman. “There also seems to be an increase in thefts out of motor vehicles at the Randburg Sports Complex, which is a little worrying.”

Opperman reiterated the importance of reporting all crimes, regardless of severity, so that there can be case numbers to refer back to in order to establish crime patterns. “It’s vital in improving our own security.”

He urged residents to check that their security systems are running properly, including the latches on trap doors to the roof, as there have been a rise in incidents where these trap doors were used by robbers to gain entry to the house.

“Always keep your guard up and know your neighbours and their specific behaviours; this will help you to better notice when something is out of place. It is of utmost importance to take responsibility for ourselves and to keep on adapting to crime trends so we can know how to fight them.”
