Illegal car mechanics slip Metro Police

BROMHOF – Metro police officers arrive to investigate, but alleged criminals are gone.

People allegedly operating an illegal car workshop in the middle of a street in Bromhof on Sundays may have evaded a Metro police raid on 10 August. Resident Amy Driessel only saw the “mechanics” in Suikerbekkie Street on 3 August, but was allegedly told by a neighbour that they operate in the street “every Sunday”.

Driessel claimed that she approached one of the men and inquired as to their adherence of the City of Johannesburg’s bylaws, when he allegedly became angry at her and she left.

When Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau was asked about the workshop, he said that he was not aware of it and had asked the Metro Police to take action on the very next Sunday, 10 August, to issue fines and arrest the mechanics, if necessary.

However, when Metro Police officers arrived on scene, the mechanics were nowhere to be found.

The investigation is ongoing. Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar would not comment, but only say that Metro Police acting deputy Director Mike Smith is investigating.

Driessel is unhappy with the workshop. “These mechanics have no consideration for the residents,” Driessel said. “They speak loud, throw spanners on the tar and already the tar road is stained with oil… This has been happening on Sundays for weeks now and it should not be tolerated.”
