Community project takes education to the next level.

Launch of Ithuteng Community After-Care Centre and Recycle Project brings in the youth.

The Refilwe Community Project opened its doors to the Ithuteng Community After-Care Centre and Recycle Project on 25

July.

This is an initiative where pupils from Grade 1 to 12 come to the centre after doing their homework and participate in either physical, educational or Bible studies. “We want to breathe education into them, helping them with homework and providing additional resources to improve their schoolwork. We build them up spiritually as well,” explains Ryan Moore, a volunteer from the US.

In addition, the children receive ‘Mulas’ (the new currency at Refilwe) for their recyclable materials and they can then exchange them for stationery, personal-care items and basic food stuffs. Siyanda Thambela, a Matric pupil from the community, shared what the centre means to the young people, “I am one of the learners from the community that people think nothing good will come out of or at least nothing worthwhile. But we have dreams, a mission to break the cycle of poverty.”
