Alex violence case postponed

FERNDALE – EFF, IFP and DA members face charges of public violence.

The case involving 57 members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), facing charges of public violence during unrest in Alexandra in May, has been postponed.

The accused appeared at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, Ferndale, on 5 August, supported by about one hundred EFF supporters who danced and sang outside the court before and after proceedings.

The case was postponed to 15 August for prosecutors to scrutinise video footage of the unrest, to determine who exactly did what.

The unrest involved the burning of tyres, barricading of roads and attempts to set buildings on fire allegedly by the political party members, and followed allegations that the African National Congress (ANC) and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) tampered with votes during the 2014 general elections.

The case is being heard at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court because the court was deemed to provide more security and space than the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.

Details: Randburg Magistrate’s Court 011 998 5300.
