Another collision on Dover and Main

FERNDALE - Frustrated residents worried about next collision on Dover and Main.

FERNDALE – A frustrated resident has voiced his concern after another car accident occurred on the corner of Dover Street and Main Avenue, in Ferndale on 26 July.

A black Golf clipped the curb, travelling down from Randburg on Dover Street and collided with the first tree where Dover narrowed and continued to hit the next set of trees on the curb.

The engine was found lying outside the car.

According to the resident [who did not want to be named], the curb on the lower Dover is the problematic area and an accident prone zone.

A resident of Complex 41 E, arrived after the incident and waited until 6am – nearly an hour after the accident – in which neither the police nor Metro Police had arrived.

It has been suggested that the danger zone in question, should be used as an alternative to Republic Road or Bond Street.

The resident said he is always worried about “when will the next one [accident] be.”

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood said he has been in contact with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) in connection with alternative and more effective measures to ensure the safety of the danger zone on the street.

“A spokesperson at JRA should be contacted in connection with additional warning signs,” advised Wood.

David Potter, Ward 102 councillor, stated that, “We are acutely aware of this accident, many happen across the city on a daily basis. Motorists of this city flout all laws of the road, putting many others at risk. It is the sad reality of the lack of enforcement in Joburg and the country and a lack of individual leadership to take control and stick to the rules of the road – be it the right side of the road.”

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, JRA’s operations manager of marketing and communication, is aware of the high accident rate in the area.

She said, “Until such time as we receive Armco barrier stock, we will erect concrete barriers in front of the property and road as a safety precaution.”

Peters-Scheepers concluded by saying, “We have logged a call for the relevant JRA department to investigate the possibility of implementing traffic calming measures, such as road signs, markings and perhaps more guardrails. We will await their feedback.”
