Bin-theft increases

GREYMONT - The man taking a leisurely stroll down the street pushing a trolley bin may not be as harmless as you would think.

JOHANNESBURG – Do you know where your trolley bin is?

Trolley bins are just about the number one item on the criminal agenda at the moment, security expert Louis Grobler from Bestsecure warned on 29 July.

“There is a present spate of trolley bins being stolen in all areas on Pikitup days,” Grobler said.

“Trolley bins are ideal ladders to jump over walls and fences, plus they’re the perfect vehicle to cart stolen goods in.”

Grobler advised residents to advise their domestic staff to bring in bins as soon as the Pikitup truck has left, or alternatively, arrange that neighbours take the bins inside for them.

Here are tips to avoid getting your bin stolen:

*Clearly mark your bins with your house number and street, and do it in bright coloured paint.

*Please ensure that you have the serial number of your bin in the event of it being stolen – this helps when reporting stolen bins to Pikitup and the South African Police Service.

*Do not put your bin out the night before Pikitup Day in your area.
