ASPIRING screenwriters were invited to attend a screenwriting and storytelling workshop by playwright and theatre journalist Daniel Dercksen.

The Writing Studio’s Write Journey workshop to be held at Joburg Theatre this month will offer “a journey into the world of story and an opportunity for writers to see how words are transformed into action”.

Attendees will also have the chance to interact with the actors who feature in Dercksen’s play, The Beauty of Incomplete Things, on at The Fringe at Joburg Theatre.

“[The workshop] is ideal for aspirant screenwriters and ardent storytellers who would like to sharpen their storytelling skills,” he said.

“[It] explores the fine art of writing visual narrative, mastering the skill of plotting and structure, and developing and exploring ideas and characters.”

Dercksen added that storytellers would be empowered to “take ownership of the creative journey and creative expression”, and that it would benefit first-time writers who wanted to define their skills, and seasoned writers and dramatists who are “trapped in the web of re-writes and unfinished projects”.

Dercksen has been a freelance film and theatre journalist for over 30 years, and has mentored writers at The Writing Studio for 15 years.

The workshop will take place on 26 July and 2 August at The Brickhill at Joburg Theatre, corner of Simmonds and Stiemens streets, Braamfontein, at 9am.
